A Simple Gift

December 8th, 2017 at 03:55 pm

Not sure if I mentioned this yet on the blog, but I bought a neighbor and friend an amaryllis bulb for Christmas. I planted it in a pot with soil about mid November, with the plan to give it to her December 1.

The bulb shot up like crazy, so I had to give it to her early (November 27) because I didn't want her to miss the flowering! The most important part!!

I can't tell you how excited she was to receive it! I mean I even told her the pot was found in my garage...spent very little on the bulb ($6). I knew she would like it as she loves plants and is quite an outdoorsy person.

The gift has even given me joy, because she keeps sending me pictures of it as it has grown and started to bloom. I have to say this is one of the very best gifts I have ever given, simply because of the joy and appreciation my friend has for it. And even better it cost me so very little!

Here's the flower today. Sorry it is sideways...not sure how that can be correcedt. May try it later. But you get the idea!

What is a simple gift that you have given that has brought much joy to the recipient?

I will admit that I almost did away with gift-giving for the parents. I spent a few dollars and some time on gifts for my MIL and mother. I will also bake for my FIL and stepdad.

We decide to honor our tradition of making donations in their name. Last year it was Watts of Love, my friend's organization that brings solar lights to remote areas of the Phillippines and other places like Nepal after the earth quake. This year it is World Vision. We let our parents pick: my biological father is giving sleep nets to Africa to prevent malaria, my inlaws are giving fruit trees, and my parents are educating a girl. We are giving soccer balls.

While I am worrying about our short-term, it just wouldn't have been right to now share what we have. I am sure that these gifts will bring joy to the recipients, but they brought me joy (and I'm feeling short of cheer).

Love the gift for your friend, and that she is sharing pictures with you!

I have been given an amaryllis a couple of times, but never managed to make them bloom!

I think the simplest gift I ever gave, that created the most joy, was a hawk feather that I gave to my grandson.

My SIL bought us one last Christmas--and I loved it. I remember buying them for my mom and aunts thinking it was "an old lady gift" but I must be on the road to oldladyland.

When I was in high school I tended to do homemade things that sometimes went over big. There was this guy featured in all the CVS ads that my friend pretended to be freaked out by, so I made her a multi-page birthday card with cutouts of him on every page and funny speech bubbles. She and my other friends about died laughing going through and reading it.

I've had tons of simple but thoughtful gifts from people that made a huge impact on me, too many to list here. It's a good way to think about gift giving, that's for sure!

That amarylis is amazing. The picture pops upright if I tap on it.

What a wonderful gift! You were so thoughtful and you proved it didn't have to be super expensive or super fancy.

I think the simplest gift I've given has been something I fixed for someone. I have a friend who likes good food, but when she was slated for minor surgery, instead of flowers, I took her some of our canned tomatoes, canned green beans, and some jam. Although she wasn't really down and out after the surgery, she said that the canned stuff came in handy and certainly having a quart of green beans to add to a meal sure helped.

The amaryllis is gorgeous! I'm so glad your friend is enjoying it! My MIL has bought me a few over the years and I've always loved them!

    It's beautiful!
It's the smallest, simple and thoughtful gifts that matters most. I made a pillow for a friend's daughter at the age of one, she's three and they can't even wash the pillow while she's awake. It just melts my heart

So pretty. I love the amaryllis. One year my mom sent us from Harry and David 3 plants because none bloomed. I think it was too cold where we lived.
