The Cost of Wisdom Teeth Removal

March 21st, 2016 at 08:36 pm

I took our daughter to her oral surgeon consult today. She is all good to have have all four wisdom teeth removed, with an appointment in early June. I also got the estimate for our portion of the cost. The full cost agreed between insurance and the surgeon is $1,408. Our portion is $588.40, which is about 42%. I did notice that the sedation is covered at 50%, rather than 60%, so I think that adjusts our portion higher than the expected 40%.

I had to pay $95 in order to hold the consultation appointment. That fee is applied to our portion. So if the costs stay the same our final bill due will be $493.40. I can definitely handle that!

Per our estimate of charges, the Usual Customary and Reasonable charge for this same procedure is $2,230. I was willing to pay that much if it came to it, but it seems we won't need to.

Do you have your wisdom teeth or did you have them removed at some point?

I had all mine removed just before my 18th birthday. So glad to have them gone!

My daughter will be 19 by the time she has hers out, her birthday is this week. And yes, I believe my husband had at least one wisdom tooth out thanks to the government!

That's close to what I just paid for my daughter - $475 out of pocket. You might want to see if it is covered by your medical insurance. I work with a woman who only had to pay $30 for her son. I have a high deductible medical plan so that was no help. Also, my daughter went with nitrous oxide rather than IV sedation.

I had mine out when I was about that age. I don't remember it being as bad as everyone says. I think when you go in expecting it to be horrible, it can only be better in reality! Good luck to her!

It is not covered by our medical insurance. It is only covered by Dental. She is having IV sedation, primarily because of how her bottom teeth are currently resting in her gum line.

I didn't think it was too bad either and I was also sedated. One moment you are aware and the next you are waking up and it is over. She's most afraid of the IV, but the office is aware of her worries.

I had all four out and so did DH. Everything impacted so it was terrible. I remember puking all night from the nitrous.

I had mine taken out when I was about 19 - right before getting braces put on.
