Ooma: A Way to Save On Telephone Costs

I know I've mentioned that we have our landline with Ooma. It is a phone line that operates through our internet connection. We purchased ours over a year ago for about $100. We continue each month to pay only for the required taxes, which for us is currently $3.81. Our landline doesn't get used to often, but it is nice to have considering we pay so little for it.

    Interesting. I love my landline, but there's nothing wrong with lowering that bill even further. So I took a look at their faq section and am curious how the phone continues to work if you don't have to leave the computer on? I'm not particularly tech savvy so this confused me. Also am I correct in thinking that if there were a power outage this service would not work because it has to be connected to the computer? One of the things I love about my landline is that it is a completely separate thing in the wall and when the power is out the phone still works.

    Our Ooma is direct wired into our wireless router not our computers. Yes, phone IS out if power is out. We figured we have four cell phones that can be charged by our cars if absolutely necessary.

    Seriously considering this Ooma offer. One question, is it difficult to setup? I have a technologically challenged partner and sometimes the frustration to change isn't worth it. But it sounds simple? Thanks in advance ... Smile

    Laura, it is not difficult to set up. The instructions that come with it are clear, we were up and running in 10 minutes if I remember right. Ours is connected to our wireless router and then the phone is connected to the telephone. We did pick a new phone number. You might be able to port your current number, but that wasn't an option for us. So we have a new number.

    Hmmm I do have a cell phone and that could be used in case of a power outage. Perhaps I could plug it directly into the cable box thing and just stop switching the whole surge protector off when I shut down the computer at night. I think I'll do a bit more research about this because just paying taxes instead of phone service costs looks like it would be under $5 a month. Not bad at all.
