Cans & Bottle Deposits for Snowflakes

We live in a state that charges us $0.05 bottle deposit on wine bottles, soda cans and bottles, and beer cans. We do consume these things so we have bottles that need to be returned a couple times a month to get our money back.

Today, my husband returned 53 bottles. At five cents each, he received $2.65 in cash. I let him keep the money. Smile

I could ask that he give me the cash and make sure I get it applied to our mortgage pay down, but it really is easier to just let him spend it on his next purchase at the convenience store.

Aluminum cans can be collected in any state and sold by the pound to be recycle. It doesn't add up to a lot of money, but if you buy beverages in aluminum cans anyway the cash back can make a little dent in your snowflake goal.

Don't underestimate the power of the small savings! Do you purchase beverages in cans or bottles? Do you recycle them? Does your state charge a deposit when you make a purchase?

    California has an obnoxious deposit law that makes it very difficult to redeem the bottles and cans for cash. Our container deposits include plastic bottles, except milk and juice.

    There's a lady here in her 70's that works at the low cost spay neuter clinic to supplement her Social Security. She feeds several feral cat colonies and alters all the cats. Several of us pool all of our bottles and cans to give to her, She has the time to stand in line at one of the few places that take the redemptions and she uses the deposit refunds to buy cat food. Win-win - the animals get fed and the State has to give back the "deposits" they make so difficult to redeem.

    I live in California and love the fact that if you return bottles/cans to recycler in quantities less than 50 they count them and give you the full CRV back. I always return in less than 50 so I can get the full price back. This is especially nice when I didn't buy the item and can get the 8, 16 or 24 cents back. Free cash! I return them to one of the machines that make it so easy to return.

    If you choose to return more than 50 they weigh the returning cans or bottles and you get a lot less than what you paid.

    I'm in Michigan so we get 10 cents per can/bottle. We generally save up for a year and then do a few mass return runs, and use the money for my annual trip.

    I grew up in Michigan and as a kid rode around on my bike collecting bottles and cans to get cash (The 10 cents per can/bottle has been around forever there). Smile

    Hi Kiki:

    I have never seen the machines. There are always long lines at the manned recycling booth and it's half a gallon of gas to get there and back. Where are the machines?

    In our state, most of the machines are inside grocery stores, some like Target hide them near customer service. Gas stations take returns but generally you just need to drop them at the counter with the attendant on duty. All our returns are at face value regardless of the amount we return each time.

    Here in Oregon, we also have a .05 bottle deposit. I just save a couple of bags up and take them in....or give them to one of my girls if they are home visiting and if they want to return them, they can keep the money. It's not a lot, but when you are a college student, every bit helps.

    When we used to buy pop in cans, we would recycle them and put the money in our Christmas Club. We no longer drink pop, so we can't recycle. However, a lady from church rides her bike and collected cans from around where she lives and turned over a check the youth group for over $500.

    Go to Calrecycle.ca.gov

    In the center of the page under where do I recycle:
    select beverage containers

    when the next page comes up use the search feature and it will tell you where recycling places are in your zip code. If you select the choices they should tell you that they have a machine or not.

    If you send me your zip code I'll look for you.
