Thoughts from the Arctic

Now I know what is like in the Arctic! I did go out mid afternoon to put the trash and recycling out for tomorrow morning. I also ventured to get the mail one house down and across the street. Luckily it was a quick trip!

I received money in the mail. A $10 Visa gift card as a rebate for something I purchased at Kohl's in November. I wish it was a check, so I could just deposit it. I have to buy something to make it count now. I will match my savings on a purchase with a principal payment on the mortgage.

You would think not leaving the house would make a no spend day, but no. My daughter's are finally reaching the end of the usable life on their Nook Color chargers. One doesn't work at all, and the other is hit and miss, on whether it will charge or not. I found one on Ebay for about $18. The seller has already notified me that it has been mailed at the post office! This purchase will give some more life to their Nooks.

My frugal happening today was eating leftover turkey soup that I made yesterday. The soup was made from Thanksgiving turkey I had put in the freezer. Tasty and toasty warm! I found two dimes in my husband's work pants, as well as a receipt for a $2 item that we need to return. Smile

Since our windchill temperatures are going to drop near 40 below zero, the schools have cancelled school again tomorrow. This is the longest winter break we have ever had. It has been very relaxing to just hang at home, get organized, and get things cleaned, but I'm not looking forward to that electric bill next month. The only plus is that a bigger bill will help meet our spending goal for the credit card bonus.

    I went out today, it's probably 41F-44F where I am (that continental sliver west of the Cascades), to do grocery shopping while the deals were still current. I stuck to a list and even did not get the treats on special, so I could remain on budget and allow for some cheap beer in a six-pack for bread and for the spouse to imbibe. I got a freebie Mr. Clean Magic Eraser 2-pack, which was nice. I did not even use the difference between expenditure and budget for coffee, but went home to brew some Irish Breakfast tea.

    We aren't quite that bad but wind chill is predicted to be as low as -20 tomorrow with an actual temp of about 10. Considering that it was 57 this morning, it's pretty amazing that it can change that quickly.

    Blue Monday here-the official back to work/school day after new year. Analyzing why I get so stressed is easier after a long break in routine. Bad habits show up: teen daughter chronic late getting to bed, getting up and going, and the affect on my schedule. How to solve this might be a priority in 2014. Better event today? I posted a book on paperback swap!

    @DS, I'm just glad it will be back to 30 degrees here on Friday!

    @PCJ, we have been sleeping late and going to bed late...we are not going to be doing good on Wednesday when we have to get up early. I hope you can get your daughter turned around without too much pain.

    We've been in the deep freeze since mid November. There is more snow in our city than at the nearby ski resorts. We don't know where to put this much snow! The city's snow removal budget was used up in early December and Police are pleading that we stay off the roads as they can't keep up with accidents. When we open the slider [patio] door to put the dog out, snow falls into the living room. The dog burrows out to his fav spot and gets his business done fast. We have to jump out of the way as he shakes off snow.

    Lots of no spend days but I've cabin fever, even the dog declines to go for a walk.

    We stayed indoors today, school has been cancelled Mon & Tues due to this cold weather/snow. Had another no spend day too. Love those days. Smile

    @snafu, sorry you have been in deep for that long. We had one year with a lot of snow not to long ago. It was getting piled up so high by the curb it was over our mailbox! Stay safe, warm.

    The College reopened today despite the fact that all of the school districts in the area were closed. Not sure what the logic was. I texted my boss that I would work from home. I'll go when it's above zero, but not below.
