Return of Fee: Southwest Card

September 18th, 2013 at 12:17 pm

I sent an email to Chase requesting the cancellation of the Southwest Card as well as the return of the annual fee. The card was cancelled. And I was told the annual fee of $99 in full will be returned. It will take one to two billing cycles to appear as a credit. We can then request a check for the credit amount, which will take about two weeks to arrive.

We went into the Southwest deal knowing the card had an annual fee. I knew there was a chance the fee would be returned, but I was okay with it if it didn't since I would still be ahead by $401. Once we get the fee back we will be ahead by the full $500.

I don't know whether I will count the $99 as a snowflake or not. Right now it seems better to send it off to the Red Cross to help with disaster relief. I'll decide when it actually arrives.

Have you paid an annual credit card fee before? What benefits do you get from it? Have you had a fee returned? Do you think I should snowflake our fee or give to charity?

Thanks for the info because I didn't know that the fee could/would be returned. Where did you get the email address from?

I logged into the account and clicked on Secure Message Center which is on the upper right hand side of the main page just across from your name. My first message had to be forwarded to the right department, but I had a complete response within 24 hours.

Maybe years ago when we were much younger, we might have had a card with a fee, but I would not have one with it now. We do however, have a rewards tied to our Wells Faro Visa...we earn 1% back on every purchase and once we reach $25, it is applied as a principal payment to our mortgage. That does not have a fee however.

You have done so awesome with your snowflakes!

I've paid fees if the reward was more worthwhile. I've actually had 100% of these one-time bonus type fees refunded. So, the only card I've actually really paid a fee on is my current AmEx. They gave me an up front bonus which covered the fee for two years. I figure by then (2 years), something better will come along. {In the interim, I boosted annual rewards by about $300 cash. So I would have done this with or without the up front bonus}. I don't recall ever paying a credit card fee (without an actual "refund" of the fee), otherwise.

I like the Red Cross idea. Neither is a bad decision. Big Grin

I've never had a card with an annual fee but my husband has. He took the cards just to build credit. Once he got an offer for a card without an annual fee he would cancel it an now he has all no annual fee cards.

He figured out that he wasn't spending enough on his annual fee with rewards to reap any benefits so he just let it go after getting an offer on a new card without one. I had no idea the fees were refundable too.

While I'm not great with credit cards I was taught in my personal finance class that an annual fee is basically paying for the privilege to have credit and should be avoided, so I have.
