Frugal Happenings: Beauty Edition

January 24th, 2013 at 08:47 pm

I think I'm pretty frugal when it comes to my beauty regimen. Part of it comes from what I'm willing to put on and in my body, and the rest come just from being frugal.

I use the following everyday:
Bar Soap
Shampoo
Conditioner
Deodorant (happens to last nearly a year)
Mousse
Lotion
Toothpaste
All in one contact solution

I use a razor and make the blade last. If I start getting small cuts, I know it's time to replace. I have the same razor handle since college.

I wear makeup only a couple times a month. I have one of each in my makeup bag:
Eye shadow
Eye liner
Blush
Lipstick
Liquid foundation
Loose powder

I used a hair dryer. Pull my hair back in a headband, or pony tail. I never use hair color or have my hair dyed. It's natural (and yes, there are a few gray hairs). I have two nail polish colors that I will wear on my toenails in the summer months. The rest of the year, nothing! Yes, I own a metal nail file, handed down from my mother.

I have a body spray my husband gave me a couple years ago. I wear it a couple times a month. I don't know if you have read, but 'fragrance' as an ingredient could be anything. Companies don't have to disclose where it comes from.

I probably won't win a beauty pageant, but I haven't scared anyone away with my looks or my smell yet! This routine does cost money, but by many women's standards it does tend to the low end. Do you have a frugal beauty routine? How much do you think you spend on your hygiene? Could you find a way to spend less, or skip part of your routine?

Hmm, it's amazing how even a bare-bones toilette can add up in items, eh? I'm probably more bare-bones than you, though as I see my face get less smooth and my eyes a bit crinkly around the edges, I've been tempted to add a few things! Smile
    Every day:
    bar soap
    toothpaste
    facial wash
    floss
    deodorant

    Every few days:
    shampoo
    hair styling cream
    hair styling clay
    hairdryer
    razor
    shaving mousse

    Much less often:
    emory board
    liquid foundation
    facial moisturizer
    body lotion

I guess I have about the same! I have been thinking about adding eyeshadow, eyeliner and a subtle lipstick to the mix.

    Every day:

    soap
    shampoo
    toothpaste
    floss
    deodorant
lotion -- I use the same stuff on my face as my hands...Vaseline or whatever is on sale

    Every few days
    razor
    shaving gel

And what's wrong with being natural? I figure I have earned those wrinkles and gray hairs.

The only things i put on my face besides soap is daily moisturizer with sunscreen. I use at least Chap Stick or other glosses/lipsticks daily. Rarely, I'll use a little blush. And Retin A at night with an added moisturizer.

I dry my hair naturally and haven't used a hair dryer for probably 15 years!

A few times in the summer i'll paint my toenails, but that's it. I've never had a manicure/pedicure.

    Hmm..

    Everyday:
    hand soap
    toothpaste
    deoderent
    mouthwash

    Every few days:
    shampoo
    chapstick

    When I think about it:
    floss
    razor

    Once in a blue moon:
    mascara
    hairspray
    lipstick

hair dryer - very rarely use

I do have my hair highlighted and trimmed approximately 2 x a year.

    That's about it.

I am similar--I wear makeup just a few days a week. Makeup is expensive! I do use an expensive gel on my hair though--I have extremely frizzy hair and when I don't use the gel my hair is crazy out of control! I did fine a way to order the gel for a much cheaper price on Amazon.

    What fun!

    Every day:

    Toothpaste
    Floss
    Body Wash (actually cheap shampoo)
    Deodorant

    Work days:

    Undereye concealer
    Eyeliner
    Mascara
Tinted lip gloss (which I also use on my cheeks)

    Every few days:

    Shampoo
    Lotion
    Nail Clipper
    Tweezers

I blow-dry my hair when I wash it (every three days). I do not color my hair. I get a haircut every two months.

Once in a blue moon I get a manicure or pedicure. I'm thinking about doing that more now that my nails are getting so brittle. Also, a nurse practitioner friend is a great believer in pedicures for health reasons as people age. Older people cannot reach their feet easily and benefit from the extra attention on their feet when getting a pedicure.
