Bring on the Guests!

July 18th, 2012 at 02:37 pm

My parents love to visit us. Unfortunately, at our last house we didn't have a guest room. They often slept on the girls twin beds and the girls would sleep on the floor. The girls didn't mind at all. My parents always felt bad about displacing them.

At our new home we have a fourth bedroom in the basement right next to a full bathroom. It will be a perfect place for guests. However, we needed a bed for our guests.

We purchased a queen mattress and boxspring Monday night, which is being delivered for free today! We did splurge a bit to get a firm mattress with extra padding. Total cost was just under $800 with tax, bed frame and a mattress cover. I expect we will have it for many many years!

Of course, I will need a set of sheets and a comforter or quilt too. The sheets I need as soon as possible, but I have blankets and pillows that can work until I find something I like!

What kinds of amenities do you appreciate in a guest bedroom at someone's house? Extra blankets, a place to sit, a mirror? Tell me about it. I want to make this a relaxing and welcoming place to stay!

I think your extra expense on getting the firm mattress will pay off that you can use it much longer.

As for amenities in a guest room, I think some place to put one's stuff is nice instead of having to put the suitcase on the floor. We stayed with someone a week and we had to keep our things in the suitcase on the floor.

I would just try to think of some great inns or B&Bs you've stayed at and what they provided, like maybe a cute basket of mini toiletries, in case they forgot anything, a water pitcher with glasses, hair blower, clean linens, soaps, good lamp for reading, maybe even some slippers! Nothing says welcome like chocolates on the pillow!

Maybe plug in an air freshener a few hours before they arrive so it smells nice.

A bedside table and lamp, box of tissue, alarm clock. Being a grandparent, I can tell you we need a good clear path to the bathroom at night. A night light.

Choose a soothing color palette, simple layout; sm. carpet for tootsies, cuddly/plush throw, roller or venetian blind, clamp light to shut off from bed. Mirror, 12 hangers, sachet/cedar block, over-the-door hook, chair, calendar, magazine/brochures, writing pad & pens, clock radio, flashlight, water jug/sm glasses, foldaway luggage rack [$ 15.], lg., plush towel, hot pad, sm basket with sample size lotions, shampoo, conditioner.

A couple of books or magazines in case of insomnia!

How fun to plan a nice little guest room.

It does sound fun! Some framed photos of your kids--and I can't tell you how much we've used the folding luggage rack we bought at an estate sale. I use it to unpack our stuff too.

A mirror. A bedside lamp and table. Something to set my luggage on: rack, chair, stool, chest.
