Changed Our Netflix Account

September 14th, 2011 at 04:14 pm

Netflix is changing their plan options as many of you know. I decided to change my plan to unlimited steaming only. Right now, we seem to watch the most from those selections.

Dropping the 2 discs out at a time saves us $7.42 over what we have been paying and keeps us from spending an additional five dollars per month that would have resulted with the new plan fees.

At some point, I might switch back to getting some disc. Right now, I think we will just grab a Red Box movie when needed.

Did you make a change to your Netflix account this month because of the new fees?

Well, I made a change, but it has more to do with the fact that the kids are back in school, than the raise in fees. Maybe 60/40. I always adapt my netflix plan based on the school year. In summer when the kids have more time I'll up it to 4 discs, and at Christmas break and spring break. We drop down to 2 discs with streaming the rest of the year (one for me, one for DH). Depending on the TV shows this year we may drop down to just streaming if there are a lot of good shows we want to watch. I'd go to just streaming, but there are a lot of old movies that aren't available that way and I like old movies.

I changed my plan to just streaming also. It seems when we have a disc we keep it forever so we really weren't getting out money's worth with the disc option.

We changed to 2 discs and dropped streaming and blu ray. We wanted to watch all the seasons of West Wing. I adjust it constantly based on TV season breaks, our schedule, and what we are currently watching.

I switched to streaming only. I will supplement with Redbox and DVD's from the library.

Oh heck yeah, we went from one-at-a-time and instant watch to just instant watch. Even though $5 more per month doesn't sound like much, it was a 50% markup with no added value (we used to pay $10.77 per month). I just couldn't stomach it. We just got our new bill and it was $7.99. I don't think we'll miss the discs too much; it was hard to time them arriving in the mail to what you were in the mood to watch.

No changes because we have streaming only.

We use Blockbuster for disks - we are grandfathered under some really nice plan (for now). Is more expensive, but infinitely better.

@ceejay74 The added value are the additional Instant Watch videos added over the past few years. They have the largest library out of any of their competitors. Really we enjoyed a couple years of great service for a discount.
Still adjusting based on your own use is a good frugal sense tactic.

I didn't necessarily change my plan, I more changed my mind. I'd had streaming only and was planning on adding the 1 disc at a time plan now that I am steadily employed. However, the price change caused me to rethink that, and stick with just the streaming option. There are tons of movies to watch via streaming -- granted, most of them are older and independent, but I've found quite a few good ones.
