Is this Taboo?

May 28th, 2009 at 03:48 pm

Can we discuss our stats? I've noticed that the number of people reading my blog has increased quite a bit lately. I am writing nearly everyday, so that does keep people's interest.

Yesterday, nearly 155 people read my blog. That's quite a few. I can only imagine what size room I would need to fit you all in!! Thank you to those of you who do read my blog. It's nice to have you here.

So, how many people read your blog yesterday? No judgement...just curious!

Hmm, I really have no idea. I don't look. Don't think I want to look... but now you've got me curious so... ok let's see.... 310 views, 92 unique visitors.

Hehe, well, I can't see why it would be taboo.

I think it would only be in poor taste if someone gloated about how great they are because of it.

And actually, the numbers are a little bit deceptive....

I must say I don't 'get' the page numbers. Are the people reading more than one post?

I had 111 unique visitors yesterday. I am not sure what the pages views is all about either. Maybe that is people viewing more than once?

Basically, the page numbers reflect how many times a certain page has been accessed. The unique visitors really refers to the number of unique ip addresses it has logged.

But to understand the discrepancy, you have to be able to accept that... well, the sad truth is, most of the "unique visitors" are bots. Automated programs, say from Google for example, that scan through the entire blog several times a day to index your pages for their search engine.

Of course, there are still many who are indeed legitimate human readers, but yeah, the bots are what makes the numbers so deceptive....
