How Much for Dog Sitting Services?

March 22nd, 2009 at 11:39 pm

My neighbor wants my soon to be 12 year old daughter to watch her 2 year old dog this next weekend. The dog will need to be let out 3-4 times per day from Friday afternoon through Sunday evening. She will also need to feed/water/play and walk the dog.

The neighbor wants to pay her $50. My first reaction is that is too much. But is it? I don't even know how much teens get for babysitting a child!

I want it to be fair, but not over the top. Help! What do all of you think? Any advise or thoughts are welcome.

they might be savings a few hundred dollars as opposed to using a kennel.

I don't know what is a "normal" price. That might be high (heck, I'd do it for half that!), but oceansluver is right. They are probably saving a bundle over using a kennel and having to take the dog to an unfamiliar place.

The dog walker in our neighborhood charges $15 for each "visit" of 1/2 hour. I think your neighbor is getting a great deal on your daughter's services. In our area babysitters make $8 an hour. Sounds like a good chance for your daughter to have some responsibility and be well-compensated. Make her save 1/2!

Thanks for your responses! It looks like $50 is fair. It looks like they would be paying at least $60 at their regular boarder, depending on extra services they would request. I looked it up online! I found out I could take our two cats there for a total of $26/night. Seems fair...of course, it adds up fast.

Their dog just spent 7 days there this past week. So, I think he would like some extra attention from DD.

Um...I get paid aminimumu of 30 a night for house/pet sitting (whether they want me to stay the night or not) because i am responsible for that house and animal and their care and well being. If it is 2 nights it is the going rate.

what a good experience for you rdaughter and a great inroads conversation for you about saving and investing!!

My friend's paid me $100 to go look in on their animals 3x while they were away. Of course, I'm also driving 30+minutes one-way each time. But I do think that $50 is a fair price - especially for caring for a dog.

Hey i was wondering if u guys could help me out. I am going to be sitting a dog for some friends for 6 days. each day i will be going driving about 15 min to there house once in the morning to feed and let the dog go out for a little bit and stay n play wit it for a few min. I will prolly be there for a half hour. Then i will be driving over again in the afternoon to do the same. They told me to come up with a price and i am not sure how much. So i figured $10 each visit that will all add up to $120. Do you guys think tht is too much or no. Please let me know thanks

Hi britton...you might even suggest $12-$15 per visit. You are spending quite a bit of time traveling. My sister told me she paid $10 per visit when she had her older dog. So, your original suggestion is very reasonable!
