We Don't Qualify

January 19th, 2009 at 03:39 pm

Well, with increased income in this last year it turns out we no longer qualify to free file with any of the IRS authorized providers. You can see if you qualify

here. I would suggest checking a couple of companies, too. The charges to file a state return can vary.

I did find an oline provider that is still free regardless of income. I have even used them before, so I know they are legit. I've even seen TV commercials for them this year. The federal return will be free and state will only be $13.95. Compare this to other providers who charge you up to $60 to file both federal and state returns.

Oh, the name of the provider we are using is TaxACT. I don't get any kickbacks for this, but you can find them

Happy 2009 tax filing season!!

Thanks for the link. I am thinking about trying H&R Block this year to see if I can get back more than I would with Turbo Tax. I was'nt too pleased with Turbo tax last year.

We've used Tax Act for the last few years and we've been quite happy with them.

I'm going to file the federal for free, but our state form is really simple, so I'm either going to file directly with them or even on paper.

I've always used Tax Act and I think they're great. Just can't beat their prices at all and I find their website easy to maneuver. Just did my mom's taxes Saturday in a matter of minutes. She lives in NH, so no state tax to file.

I found a deal on Fatwallet on the Ultimate bundle for only $11.90. I've never used Ultimate before and this is the cheapest option I found for federal + state.

Thanks for the info! I usually use H&R but had decided that this year I was going to try turbo tax. Will look into Tax Act as well. I just hate paying 200+ to have my taxes done!!

I have used H&R online for several years and have been really pleased. This is my first year without a state return (I moved to one of those wonderful states WITHOUT state income tax!) so am thinking of going with a completely free service this year for our federal. I haven't heard of TaxACT and will have to check them out.

    Thanks for the tip!

I'm not sure if I'll be able to do the free filing this year - not because of making too much, but because of my two Independant Contractor jobs - think I have to do a Schedule C for them. I usually use TurboTax - will have to see how much it'll cost me . . .ugh!
