My New Investment

January 2nd, 2009 at 03:16 pm

Oh this is so exciting! It's not very often I make a new investment.

I'm in investing in energy saving bulbs. Yes, the now famous CFL bulbs! I specifically asked for a Home Depot gift card from my parents for Christmas so I could purchase a few. I didn't specify an amount, but they were generous and gave me $50.

Did you know that CFL's come in soft white, bright white and daylight? We bought the bright light, but after trying them in our living room we decided they were a little too bright for our preferences. We moved these to the garage and the basement where brighter light is more desirable.

We are taking the other bright white bulbs back to exchange them for the soft white. These are actually a little cheaper, too. So, we'll get to pick up a few more!! We are replacing as many as we can with the $50, starting with the lights we use the most often.

It will be interesting to see what kind of return I get on this investment. Of course, my actual outlay is $0 thanks to my gift card. So, any result should be positive!!

I should probably start unplugging my microwave, too. I hear those are huge energy hogs, just because of that little light!

Wal-Mart has some also, so if you got a Wal-Mart gift card for Christmas you could use that for a zero cost investment!

I saw CFLs at Dollar General one day for about $3.00 each. They had a rebate form to get back the $3.00. I bought two bulbs. Since I already have several CFLs, I didn't need many.

There are also many coupons out for these (atleast the brand wal-mart carries), it might be worth your time to check ebay and bid on some of the coupons if you are going to be replacing allot!

Thanks, I didn't realize there were different types. The soft white doesn't put out much light, so maybe I'll try one of the others.

I had a Home Depot gift card, so they have been purchased there. The soft white ones are less expensive than the bright white ones! That is a plus. Smile

We have some in out place as well. I still need to pick up another 1 or 2, but not many. I don't put them in the ceiling lights in our apartment, though. I know I won't go up there to get them when we move, so unless a light bulb blows out, I just leave the old ones in. If a light bulb goes out and I have to replace it, I will put in a CFL though.

Koppur, if you are still looking for CFLs, I saw some today at Aldi for $1.98 a piece. That's pretty cheap. Thought you would like to know.
