Check out this new calculator

July 7th, 2008 at 08:57 pm

I haven't used this calculator yet, but I heard about it on the Today show this morning. If you are thinking of trading in your SUV for a hybrid or other fuel efficient car you may want to check it out

Text is here. and Link is http://www.edmunds.com/calculators/gas-guzzler.html
here.

We just bought a Honda Odyssey...not exactly a fuel efficient vehicle, but better than some. We also own a Ford Taurus that is a sure gas guzzler and my husband will be driving it 30 minutes to and from work each day. I would love to get something different, but I know a paid off vehicle with high gas prices is cheaper than buying another vehicle...unless we could do an even trade. Hmm, what fuel efficient vehicle could I get for $3k?

I hope this calculator helps a few of you out in making the decision on whether to trade or not.

How about a Saturn SL2? You could pick one up for $1700 - $2400. 28mpg city / 34 mpg highway.

Wow, it would take me only 31 years for me to break even on my trade. I think I'll stick with my gas guzzler.

It would take me 62 months to break even. No thanks!

I think something to consider (which most of us have) is driving less. The less you drive, the less the cost of gas should matter. I combine errands, walk or ride my bike if I can, carpool when possible and use public transportation.

Plus, I like the car I have now. No worries about it getting scratched (the first one was years ago!), no worries about keeping it clean, no worries about a car payment (paid for long ago), etc. etc.

66 months for me trading in my Toyota Tacoma. Savings of $276/month on gas!

lol... I put in my new car vs. my car I just got rid of and I will save nothing! This does have me concerned though as it said the mpg on the Jetta were only 22. I consistently got 32 mpg and I'm struggling to get that with my new car. Traffic has just been atrocious lately.

    Thanks for sharing that!
