Things I Don't Do - Number 4

I know I'm not going to be alone in this one either. I don't do cable TV!!

We have been married almost 12 years and have managed to live without cable all of those years. How much have I saved? At the low end cable probably costs $30 a month. I have avoided spending $4,320!! And that is the low end. What if I paid $75 a month? I would spent...$10,800 in the last 12 years.

Currently, we have just about 7 over the air channels. The girls watch PBS every morning. I can sleep in and know they aren't watching anything inappropriate.

I'm not a big TV fan to begin with. I don't watch ANY TV during the day. We all sit down and watch Deal or No Deal and Biggest Loser each week as a family.

If you have cable TV and can pay for it, that is great! I just feel free not having that bill to pay each month as well as the free time to do other activities. Trust me, I would never see DH, if we had cable. He watches too much TV as it is.

    we don't do cable, either...haven't for the past 6 or 7 years...kids at school think my DD is a space alien...(and- gasp!- we don't own a Wii, either)

    No cable or Wii for us either -- or Netflix. I do borrow movies and one or two TV shows from the library, but we don't watch them regularly. In fact, I can't tell you when -- if ever -- we have sat down as a family to veg out in front of the TV.

    I have to purchase the bare bones service ($13.50/month) in order to get any reception. I like to watch the news while I am getting ready for work each morning, and the news when I get home at night. Other than that, I will ocassionally watch stuff like the Simpsons or PBS shows, or whatever. But, mostly, I pay $13.50 to watch the news. My b/f, however, pays over $130/month to get all the channels, HD, etc. CRAZY!!

    I went without cable for three years, but was able to get all the network stations in fairly clearly.

    But now with my Tivo, in order for it to work you must have cable. So I have the least expensive version. When I first got it, it was $11.50/month, but three months after Charter was bought out by Time Warner, it rose to $18.55/mo!!

    My (prepaid - cancellation fee) Tivo contract runs out in Jan 2010, so I will probably drop both cable and Tivo at that time.

    We didn't have cable until we were 25. I think it is more rare these days to not have cable though. Our parents who refused cable when we were kids, now have it. So I keep thinking, geez, times have changed. I always annoyed my roommates in college because I refused to pay for cable/watch it. I made their life more expensive I guess. But on minimum wage and with college costs. Pure luxury, wasn't interested (plus between school and all my jobs, not like I was sneaking peaks at the cable channels - LOL).

    Personally we love our cable (& tend to use it as cheap entertainment. e.g. we don't go to the movies, etc.).

    But that is a lot of money saved!!! We wouldn't have cable if we couldn't afford it, for sure...

    we do not have cable nor do we have basic reception of any channel. It has been 7 years for my husband but we both admit that sometimes we do wish we can just watch some tv once in awhile but we will not cave in.

    nope, us either. Although lots of DD's friends have cable, at even at her young age, she comments on it. But she was a cable junkie (that darn Disney channel) during our Florida trip, so I guess that's one more reason not to have it. If you could only buy the channels you want! We'd love to have the BBC...
