Am I Irish?

March 17th, 2008 at 03:32 pm

I'm married to a man who is half Irish, so I have a Irish last name. Am I Irish?

I like to think that I am. I can't say that we have maintained any traditions. I do wear green, but we don't attend parades, or eat any special meals. I've recently learned that cornbeef and cabbage is more of an American tradition.

At any rate, Irish or not, I want to share one of my favorite Irish blessings:

May love and laughter light your days,
and warm your heart and home.
May good and faithful friends be yours,
wherever you may roam.
May peace and plenty bless your world
with joy that long endures.
May all life's passing seasons
bring the best to you and yours!

Happy St. Patrick's Day!!

I am pretty sure that just because you married someone who is/was Irish that doesn't make you Irish.

Unless of course you count by association.

Tee-hee. My husband is fond of pointing out that "my people taught your people about corned beef & cabbage." Actually, the Irish in my ancestry came into the US via a different route than would have put them in ouch with his ancestry. So not until the generation before me did we learn about corned beef & cabbage. Cabbage, yep. Corned beef, nope. But now we do both love it...I understand Beijing now has a St Patrick's Day Parade! I wonder if they have corned beef? Yesterday I ate some halal goat that tasted like corned beef. Is this getting to be a mixed up world or what?

    M E: I'm pretty sure you're right. I like the association though!!

Joan: I just learned too that German Chocolate cake is not really German either. It was created here in the 1950's by a woman with the last name German!!

We went to our local historical museum and saw Irish dancing...so fun to hear the music and see the costumes.

And English muffins are not English muffins. A Brit once told me that what we call an English muffin would be called a crumpet in England, and what we call a muffin would be a cake.

Sorry to talk about the English on St. Paddy's Day of all days!

At the very least you are an Honorary Irishwoman! Happy St. Patrick's Day to you!
