Eating Out Costs Since January

June 9th, 2017 at 11:26 am

OMG!

I say we don't really eat out, but I did a report on YNAB to see how much we have spent since January 1. We have spent $1,158.51 in restaurants. I was shocked. I feel like we only go out once, maybe twice a month.

Here's the monthly breakdown:

January $153.03
February $142.71
March $254.90
April $428.35
May $159.73
June $19.79

I know that in March my daughter was home on spring break, and my husband was off work, I know we ate out as a family at least once and took her to lunch at couple times. In April, we were traveling for eight days and we did buy food out many times during that time.

January, February, and May seem like they may be more normal spending amounts.

In May, there were 9 restaurant transactions. Four of those were my husband eating out for lunch. One was for pizza when I thought a friend of my daughter was going to eat with us. She didn't but I had already ordered it. The other four were restaurant meals for two to four of us. I would say two were for convenience and two were for enjoyment/entertainment.

I'm sure people spend far more than we do eating out, but even basic grab and go at Subway adds up!

Do you know how much you spend eating at restaurants on a monthly basis?

Right now my average is $74 a month. But included is the cost of treating others, usually my grandsons.

That's more money than we have ever spent. An occasional "on the go" meal at Chipotle or In-N-Out is about it. Probably less than $40 in a spendy month where travel in involved, less than $20 in a typical month. A lot of months with no restaurant spending. I always have reasonably nutritious snacks in the car, and a sandwich if I think I'm going to be out at lunch time.

Most restaurants offer food that is inferior in almost every way than what you can make at home. Even the expensive ones still order their ingredients from Sysco and the like. Hang out in the parking lot in the early morning to watch the delivery trucks, and then decide if the food is worth the money.

ccfree, we spend about the same, or about $150/month on average. Of course, the more people you are feeding the more it adds up. For us it's probably more like a bigger splurge once per month, but we also treat out friends and family, or just to be social (the bulk of our eating out).

Tonight we take the kids out for end-of-school celebration. One of our favorite hole-in-the-wall places. We won't get out of this place for under $50, but the food will be absolutely amazing.

We spend $0-$25 dollars each month on eating out. It's never been something we typically spend our money on. If our kids give us Panera cards as gifts, we may go out to eat more. I am often gobsmacked about the amount of money people spend eating out these days! I do enjoy cooking and actually enjoy eating what I prepare.

We eat out so infrequently, that when we do, we go to a semi-nice place and pay $100 +/- each time, as I've mentioned. That is for 4 "adult" entrees, and a couple drinks for me and DH. Unfortunately, it is what it is. If we get take out, it's much less. If it's in the budget and something you want to do, that's ok! Sometimes, schedules dictate the eating out. I think we're all aware of the spending and will make adjustments in other categories when necessary. 😀

We used to eat out a lot more than we do now. We decided about one year ago that we wanted to have a house of our own more than anything, so this was one area that we drastically cut back on to save more money. It is rare for us to go out to eat nowadays. When you add it all up it is very eye-opening in deed.

Yes, Belinda, it was eye opening! We will need to take steps to reduce this further in the coming year(s) if we want to save for our home, too.

We spend between $60 - $100/mo on eating out / takeout. Usually one restaurant meal, and then two or three pizzas/takeout Chineese.
