Reminder And Without Power

July 1st, 2014 at 01:22 pm

We survived a very strong storm yesterday, either straight line winds or a small tornado. No damage to our home, but a man was killed up the road when a building a collapsed on him during the storm. About an hour after the storm we lost power for eight hours. I think the food in our fridge and freezer is okay, as we really tried to keep the doors closed for the duration.

Our neighbor next door was getting water in his basement, which a sump pump when he has power does a fine job of handling. Without power it is a problem. He ended up getting a generator to handle it. We weren't getting but a drop into our sump pump.

On Sunday night we received quite a bit of rain, which ended up causing an issue with two bridges in our little town. One collapsed when a semi went over it. It is on a major highway through our town. We now can't get to the other side of town without taking a major detour. There is another road we use with frequency, that has also been closed because the road washed away. We have seen pictures of two full sized cars that fell into the area washed away.

We became aware of our lack of batteries, among a few other things that we should be more prepared for with storms and outages. Something to work on.

Don't forget that the Capital One Independence Day offers are still available through July 3. You can get a $100 bonus for the checking account and $76 for the savings.

Here's my post about the offers.

Should I throw out the milk and eggs? Any storms in your area lately?

We experienced the storms last night, too, but no damage in my immediate area other than flooded roads.

I think your eggs will be okay for sure, as long as you didn't open the doors. The milk may be okay, too, if it remained cold.

Goodness! What bad weather your area has had!

Glad you are all safe. Our region is prone to unexpected, unpredicted, quick, powerful winds and rainstorms that knock out electricals, wash out roads/highways and temporally flood out bridges. We keep camper type battery lights and lg, 'floating' lanterns/flashlight http://www.walmart.ca/en/ip/eveready-led-floating-lantern/6000142541031 in a kitchen cupboard and two of 4 bedrms. The trick to longevity is to unscrew the connection/contact point but keep the unit intact so it just takes a quick turn to get light! If you generally have 4 in the house it helps to have 5, working flashlights. Would it work to assign one DK to check flashlight operations each month and number of working batteries?

The eggs should be fine. Eggs can sit out at room temperature for several days if necessary. If you didn't open the fridge much the milk should be okay. I believe the rule of thumb is 12 hours without power for a fridge that stays shut and 72 hours for a freezer. I'd just smell the milk every time you use it, because its life was probably shortened. I'd be more worried about any raw meat you might have had in there.

My area in Texas was hit with multiple days of heavy rains. It caused flooding all over. Luckily the storm only lasted a couple of days instead of the week that they anticipated. And luckily no power outages. Glad you didn't have any damage.

Sorry about your storms and lack of power. And, of course, your neighbor.

I bet your eggs will be OK.

    Holy Crap!
    Glad you guys are okay!
I'd use the milk and eggs. But I'd probably try to use them up more quickly.

In the UK they don't refrigerate eggs all the time. I'm sure they're fine. I suspect we had the same storm. The power went out when I was teaching and we ended up dismissing class.
