Government Paycheck...Early!

October 11th, 2013 at 12:45 pm

I can see my husband's mid month pay pending in our bank account. It seems so early! However, I realized that Monday is Columbus Day, a government holiday. Therefore, the next business day is October 15, the official payday. So it is really on time. Just as promised. Now I just need the government to fully open so his travel payments from September can be paid.

I did purchase my running shoes on Amazon. They should arrive today. My body can't wait. I used Ebates to connect to Amazon and I have earned $2.18 cash back on that purchase. I like cash back...only wish we didn't have to wait so long to get it from Ebates.

It will be another spendy weekend. We have to pay admission for another band competition. We also will have guests again. It means more spending on food, but both sets of guests are helping with that, which is much appreciated. All meals will be here at our house, so that keeps things less expensive than if we went to a restaurant.

I've noticed our dryer isn't drying as efficiently as it should. And it may have been a fluke last night, but the washer didn't seem to be spinning things as dry as they could have been. Those were sheets and towels, so maybe that was the issue. I need to pull the vent house off the dryer and see if it needs to be cleaned out. That is usually the issue and I hope it is this time. However, I know our dryer (and washer) is over ten years old. Fingers crossed I don't need replacements...although I will consider a repair first.

How old are your washer and dryer? Do you clean out your dryer vent regularly? Did you know lint is a common cause of house fires?

Ours are about 4 years old, so we don't anticipate having to replace them anytime soon.I always clean the lint trap before each new drying cycle and I never run it when we are away or asleep (for fear of fire).

I bought a small, used, apartment style stacking type washer dryer when we bought this condo. It was excellent but I didn't anticipate having so many visitors every summer. It was perfectly adequate for our family but every summer or holiday weekend I felt nearly tied to the laundry rm.

In May I saw an ad selling off Show Home furniture and appliances. The family sized W/D had more features than I'll ever use but an odd steel blue/grey color. The decorator mentioned people disliked the color so she was open to offers. Since new models were coming into the stores just then, I offered half the asking of the more basic models I had been pricing. When she accepted my offer a few weeks later, I sold my existing set via Kijjiji [an online Buy 'n Sell site similar to CraigsList]. I had to make arrangements and pay for delivery but it was worth the hassle.

I clean out the dryer's lint trap after every session and clean out the vent hose at the start of each season. I too fear the fire hazard. I read somewhere that people use the lint as a fireplace fire starter.

Take it from me, lint is an excellent fireplace fire starter. I also am fanatical about cleaning the lint trap. Being on a 4th condo, I'm going to ask the Board about where the lint traps vent to the outsideare and how they are cleaned. Once I got fanatical about lint and looked carefully, well, its eye opening walking past some apartment complexes.

Oh and sometimes its the belts - is your washer making noises or is it very touchy about being balanced?

When I worked at a fire safety company, one of the things I did was do surveys. One big question on it was about how often you cleaned the dryer lint - it was surprising how many people didn't. It is a big fire issue.
