Eating At Home

September 25th, 2013 at 09:59 pm

We almost always eat at home with food we have purchased from the grocery store. That will be the case tonight. And it will require preparation to cut up and season vegetable that will be roasted in our oven. Yummy!

We only have a couple night a week where dinner needs to be quick. I try my best to plan for those with something very easily prepared. It might be pre-cooked in the Crockpot, something needing to be thawed, or a simple sandwich. These are so much healthier than the majority of take out food, and far less expensive. I know I could be a better cook and meal planner, but I try not to sweat my imperfection knowing I'm doing pretty good spending less and eating healthier than many.

Since the groceries were purchased Monday, and all I did was clean more windows today, I can officially declare it a no spend day! That is good news. The bad news, or frustrating news is we are still waiting on my husband's travel payment. I noticed on the website that end of fiscal year travel payments are usually delayed. Fingers crossed for tomorrow.

How often do you eat out? Would you say you eat at home more than eating out? Do you plan ahead for those crazy busy nights with simple meals? What is your go to simple meal?

We definitely eat at home more often than we eat out. We eat out twice a month or so. If I am really sick we might do it a bit more than that, but I try not to. My go to meal for crazy nights is microwave tacos. If the hamburger is thawed it takes 8 minutes. It if isn't it takes 15 minutes, tops. Sometimes I will have pre-seasoned taco meat in the freezer that I can just heat up and I'm good to go. Another fast one is cheeseburgers. We make preformed patties and freeze them in family sized portions, then make them on our George Foreman grill, but you can easily buy frozen preformed patties. Takes five to six minutes to cook and an additional minute to melt the cheese and toast the buns.

Yeah, we normally only eat out for special occasions--maybe once a month or less. I find meals out staggeringly expensive, and I always take my lunch to school now.

Given my job situation, I eat at home 99% of the time. There have been a few times I've splurged to eat lunch out with a friend, or, when I was by myself, I treated myself to fast food. Not sure that's really a treat, but for me that's what I wanted.

I can eat very simply during the week, pulling something together from what's on hand. It could be frozen chicken or black bean burgers or maybe pasta. I do like to cook, when I'm not pressed for time, and I always like to plan my lunches for the coming work week, so Sunday is a great time for cooking up a big casserole, soup or stew.

We eat out usually once a week. Sometimes 2 if we go for Sunday breakfast or if I am not feeling well. But I try to make sure we always have something I can fix. Even if it is a frozen pizza or soup and sandwiches.

We try not to have crazy nights, but if there is not a lot of time to cook, the crockpot saves the day. Or we just plan leftovers for busier days. Like MEC says - eating out is crazy expensive - so we rarely do so.
