Road Trip=Money Spent +Free Plants

June 2nd, 2013 at 10:54 pm

We took a road trip to our home town which involved driving 8 hours this weekend, some meals out, some free provided meals. We had a great time connecting with family and old friends. The time always goes too fast!

I haven't added up the money spent, but I do know these perennials I dug out of my parents garden beds were free!! They are getting their house ready to move so thinning out helps them, while the plants will help our yard look like it wasn't just built!

I brought home chives, poppies, lamb's ear, daylillies, shasta daisies, coral bells, and a couple of bearded iris bulbs! Now to actually get them planted. I didn't plan on bringing them home, so my yard is not quite prepped for them. Luckily I have some ideas. Smile

I also got this broken, but very pretty pot! Now I get to decide how to use it. Smile

Did you get anything free this weekend? Did you get to spend time with family or friends?

Sounds like you had a terrific time, well worth the 8 hour drive and scored about $ 30. of perennials.
Broken planter pot: I think any of the water proof glues used by plumbers or in the plumber's section of HD will work well to hold the large, broken section. Spread glue on both pot and edge of inside broken piece, holding in place with masking tape or painter's tape for 24 hours. Immediately remove any excess glue that squeezes through. I'd likely add a minuscule amount of glue to the outside. If you put your strawberry plant pot or something over hanging the crack will all but disappear to the eye...I think

If you can't fix the pot, it might be a good one to lay on its side for a spilling flowers effect

@CB, I thought that same thing when I took it from my parents. It's such a pretty copper glazed pot it has to look good in some way, right?

@snafu, I was able to get the broken piece in place this morning, since it was cooler. I will be looking for a glue today. Smile

Wow, you did great on the plants. Do you think after you glue the piece you could reinforce it with some webbing or something so it wouldn't push out. It is a great pot.

We did get something free this weekend. We went to an open house at a local antique mall and we both signed up for door prizes. My name was the first one chosen and I won two black caned bottom chairs.

@rob, that is a nice prize! I think I will put a little wire around it at one or two places that shouldn't be too noticeable. My parents had it that way and it seemed to work.

At the college where I work, there is a program called Nature Reach, which works to educate children and adults about local wildlife. They also rescue hurt animals which are native to the area. They use broken pots like that one as shelter for animals like lizards and snakes.

That IS a nice looking pot that would be worth repair, IMO.

I Am getting something free this week....a free gas tank fill-up, courtesy of the dealer, after I pointed out how quickly the gas gauge fell....it appears they must not have filled up the tank as they're supposed to do.
