Sewing Gifts

January 12th, 2010 at 12:13 am

I spent the day sewing a tote bag for my neice that will turn 6 later this month. It turned out great! The fabric was $2 on clearance at Hobby Lobby. I only needed to use thread and interfacing that I already had. It will have to be mailed. Six year olds like gifts in the mail, right?

I also made a fabric pouch that measures about 6 inches x 5 inches. I will give it as a gift as well.

I've been thinking of quite a few things I could make to give as gifts this year. Here's an initial idea list: pajama pants, pillow case, napkins, coasters, placemats, throw size quilt. I even have instructions to make a purse and a stuffed turtle! It is exciting to think about all the possibilities.

My oldest daughter made some coasters yesterday. She is really getting the hang of sewing. She's about to learn how to sew a zipper in her sewing class at school. I just taught myself today!!

I just need to keep the cost of fabric low by watching sales and picking through clearance fabric.

Do you know how to sew? What kinds of things do you make?

I have a sewing machine that I don't know how to use. After reading your post, I'm more inclined to get it out of the box and try my hand at it.

I have sewn every curtain in my home over the years, and a tablecloth just a couple weeks ago.

TIP: Leave the machine out in a work area if possible. You will much more likely use it if it is easily accessible. Store notions and fabric nearby in a closet. JoAnns has sewing boxes on sale frequently or use a 40% off coupon.

TIP: Anything rectangular or square is a snap. Stick with easy projects at first to get confidence. Such as home decor, pillows, totes, etc. Clothing is way more involved, and takes a couple years practice to make something that looks and fits well. Sewing clothes does not really save money especially with big discounts you can find in the stores.

TIP: Troll yardsales, craigslist, ebay and elsewhere for fabric. Sellers on Etsy who have too much might have some at big discounts, here's a search for 3 yards fabric under $5, play around with the search to find more

I am lucky to receive designer samples (those thingy's usually in sample books) free from my contacts. These are not large pieces, 24" or so max. But they make great totes, small wallets, etc. and are luxurious materials (silk, chintz, etc.) Maybe you can inquire around for some?
