Buying Habits Changing

February 13th, 2009 at 12:08 am

My buying habits for just about everything are changing. In the past, I have based many purchases on price. The lowest price. It has served us well in the past. And, it will still factor into my purchasing decisions.

I will now factor in the ingredients, looking for natural, rather than chemical and synthetic. I will also factor in the packaging. The less packaging the better, the less plastic the better.

I'm doing this for my family's health, as well as the earth. I would like us to generate less waste. I already use reusable bags when I grocery shop. It has cut done on the usage of plastic bags significantly.

I'm not worried about global warming. Maybe I should be, but for now I'm making the changes because I can. I can afford to spend an extra dollar or two on something with natural ingredients that is better for our bodies.

From now on you won't see any posts from my on Walgreen's savings. Unless, the purchase is a product that meets my new buying criteria. Right now I can only think of a few things I've purchased in the past at Walgreen's that qualify. Sure, I can get makeup for free, but it has so many chemicals that are bad for my skin that it is no longer worth it to me.

In the future, you might find a few posts about the changes we are making and what the financial impact is as we start buying in a new way.

Any one else making these types of changes?

We're not making these changes. . . we (well, the "I" of we) have shopped this way for years. That's part of the reason our grocery bill is higher than average (or maybe average here, LOL). Whole, pure foods are something I value and am willing to decrease spending in other areas to spend a bit more on groceries. I don't wear makeup and we bring shopping bags.

I grew up with a family in the same mindset, so i shop this way too, and have for a long time. it is why i dont get that excited when people blog about getting mac and cheese or something similar for free or very cheap - i would never eat it anyway.
the foundation i buy is $48 a bottle, but i would never put anything that is less quality on my skin.
i think it is great that you have adopted this new step. if you're not concerned about global warming, i guess that's ok. by making small changes you'll no doubt be helping out anyway.
