Things I Don't Do - Number 1

March 24th, 2008 at 04:26 pm

If any of you have read The Millionaire Next Door, you know that millionaires are millionaires because some of the things they don't do...such as buying brand new cars and so on.

We are not millionaire's yet, but I thought I'd share a few things I don't do that would qualify me as a future millionaire.

The first one is that I don't get my haircut every month. I have naturally curly hair, so it is not as noticeable when my ends are uneven. I visit the local Great Clips with a coupon about every two months. I get a cut only. No styling or blow drying. I say no to all their attempts to sell me special curl shampoo. My use of a coupon, saves me money and allows me to leave a fair tip.

I tend to only take my girls about every two months as well. My husband gets his cut every three weeks, but how his hair looks is important to his job. The Army has some standards you know!! I get the joy of shaving the back of his neck once a week so that he doesn't have to get a haircut that often.

This has been our routine all of our married life. The only change I see is that someday I might need a little color to cover up some gray. I'm sure I'll find a way to save on that too!

Feel free to share your "don't do's" and stay tuned this week for more of mine.

I agree with you, that is how I have saved so much and my net worth is well over a million.
I have NEVER spent any money at the hairdresser. I have colored and cut my own hair for over 35 years. I have never had my nails done. I don't buy fancy lotions, make up, etc. A jar of cold cream, eyeliner and eye shadow are about all I need. When I was working, I always took my lunch; my husband still does. Little things add up.

I went to Great Clips for my last haircut (with a coupon) and got the best haircut I've had in a year! I'm definitely going back.

I don't pay or pay very little for some household items, such as shampoo, soap, tooth paste, tooth brush, hair color, deodorant, body wash, lotion, etc.

Three years ago April, I bought a $15 clipper at the ConAir outlet store. Since then, I have cut my own hair every 2-3 weeks at home. Before that, I was going to Hair Cuttery and spending $15 each time about every 5 weeks. That means I've saved about $150/year or $450 since I got the clippers.

My wife cuts her own hair, too. And our daughter hasn't gotten her hair cut for 2-3 years except for some home trims.

I'm so impressed by those of you who cut your own hair!!

Sounds like you're off to a good start to "millionairedom."

I let my hair grow long enough to donate to Locks of Love, and then keep my eyes peeled for a salon that is offering free cuts to donors.

After reading one of Disneysteve's posts, I bought a clippers to start cutting my husband's hair. [Haven't done it yet, but I'll blog and let everyone know how it goes and whether or not we are still married.]

I'm fortunate that in my mid-40's I still only get an occasional grey hair ... I think I'll just let it grey when the time comes, and if I do decide to dye I'll probably DIY.

Several years ago, I decided to quit having my hair cut and give all the money saved to a single mom at Christmas...it was so fun, and I have a very easy cut that I trim myself. I get about 1 haircut per year now. The hub has his trimmed by his cousin and DD3 gets hers cut about 1-2 times per year. I DIY dye my hair about every 2-3 months...yes there are some roots by then, but I just dont take the time to do it more often.

Hehe, I only cut my hair twice a year. I usually take my coupon to Great Clips and they do a great job. I probably should get it cut 3 times. Just not very necessary to do it much more.

But we take the kids to beauty school. I have no interest in cutting our own hair (I cut their hair for the first 2 years each - blech). But I don't see the point in hundreds a month either, on HAIR! Big Grin We were going to experiment with a buzz cut on BM. I was just telling dh it is probably cheaper to get a regular buzz at beauty school than to buy our own clippers anyway.

monkeymama - My clipper was $15. You aren't going to beat that at the beauty school. In 3 years, I figure I've saved $450 so far from that $15 purchase.

We have a WAHL trimmer that works great...except we did just break a plastic piece! That reminds me I need to look up that replacement part online. We have had it for about three years.

Just like the seasons I get my hair cut 4X/yr at Great Clips. Mine's short, and I don't trust DH with a pair of sharp scissors around my face. I'm getting quite gray but I like the look so Miz Clairol ain't going to visit.
