First Semester College Books

June 25th, 2018 at 10:49 pm

Oh wow! I can tell books for my youngest daughter majoring in engineering are going to be far more expensive than my other daughter in music and art. My daughter preordered her books today, and the total was a preliminary $475! We were able to rent most used, one for Calculus will work for all three semesters so that isn't too bad. It's also one of those online type books, so it can't be resold. And get this, two classes didn't yet have books yet determined, so the cost is going to go up.

We will likely take a look over the summer to see if we can find these used for less than the rentals. I guess I'll just keep setting aside that $333 each month to cover books! Smile

I work at a college and have heard several students tout the convenience and affordability of renting textbooks from Amazon. They also told me shipping was free and they could get the books really quick. I don't know if that was some limited time deal, but it might be worth a look.

Thanks crazyliblady, we have rented from Amazon for my older daughter and it has worked well. Shipping is free both ways. This college says it is competitive with Amazon, and doesn't charge state sales tax. I will be double checking all of this, but while we were here we thought we would go ahead and preorder knowing it could all be returned if needed.

I feel your pain! My son is also an engineering major and the books have been outrageous. The first year was the worst though. Because some texts covered additional semesters and he learned which classes really used the assigned books. In some cases he shared a book with a roommate. My personal pet peeve is the professor who requires a textbook that he authored. This has happened more than once and seems like such a conflict of interest!
