Example of How Credit Cards Get Complicated

September 17th, 2014 at 05:25 pm

I know there are many, many examples of credit card problems. This one is minor really. I'm just annoyed with myself for forgetting the rules!

I had a Southwest Rapids Rewards credit card that I opened for 55,000 bonus points. I did receive them after spending $2000. I redeemed the first $350 worth of gift cards right away. I was undecided about the rest, so I left the points. However, I proceeded to cancel the card to get the annual fee of $99 refunded. That did happened with no issues.

The problem is I can't get to my rewards, although I can log on, and redeem them without being a card member! Ack. Why did I forget that piece of information?

I have plans to apply for their lower grade card which has a $69 fee when the next promotion comes out, so this is not a total loss. I will make sure to redeem in full before I cancel again.

I was going to redeem 20,000 points for $200 worth of Lowe's gift cards...so we can start looking a refrigerators. This may just be the sign that we need to wait on that purchase.

Don't play with credit cards if you want simple and easy. They aren't simple and easy! It does take tracking and understanding of the rules!

Anyone know when the next Southwest Rapids Rewards offer might come out? I do have quite a few things I could charge. Smile

I think you have to look at it like a wash because of all the rewards you have received in the past although it is irritating and hard to let go!

I will get those rewards...just have to wait until I apply for the next Southwest Rewards Visa offer. Smile But yes, not the end of the world.

I am confused. The rewards should have been sent to Southwest, and you should be able to redeem the points without needing a southwest card. Have you logged into your Southwest air account to see if the points are there? If you have, and they are not there, I would send a message to Chase asking them what rapid rewards number they sent the points to.

ironicone, my points ARE in my Southwest Rapids Rewards account, Chase has done nothing wrong. When I try to redeem it says I need to have a Southwest card. It does seem odd, I agree. Maybe I'll try again.

I did look again. I can redeem them for airline tickets, but not for their "more rewards", such as gift cards. I wanted to redeem for a gift card. I won't lose the points. I will just need to connect a card to the account to redeem for gift cards. I'm sure I could have them open my card that I closed a month ago, but then I would sure to be charged the annual fee that I already had refunded. I can wait for the next SW Visa deal. Smile

You might be able to call and talk to someone. I had a similar thing happen after I closed a card and couldn't access the rewards page once I did. I was able to call and they redeemed my points. It was worth the phone call. Smile

Thanks LF, I may do that. You had this happen with Southwest?
