Cost of Cooling Food

July 9th, 2014 at 02:54 am

I'm still pining for a new stainless steel fridge. It isn't a need at all. We went looking a couple times in the last few weeks because of great sales going on this time of year. I was amazed at the Energy Star cards on the appliances indicating the cost per year. Some refrigerator's were less than $50 per year to operate!

I started to wonder how much our current fridge cost to operate. I had noticed our library had

Text is Kill a Watt meters and Link is http://www.amazon.com/P3-P4400-Electricity-Usage-Monitor/dp/B00009MDBU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1404873618&sr=8-1&keywords=kill+a+watt+meter
Kill a Watt meters available to borrow. The meters calculate how much energy an appliance uses.

Turns out our fridge uses .08 KwH per hour. Over the course of the year, based on our electric rates, our fridge costs $89 a year to operate. Clearly not a lot more than the new refrigerators, but almost twice the amount!

I went even further to calculate that the fridge we were looking at uses 474 KwH per year. For us that is $61 a year, so our true savings is about $28 a year. It would sure take a lot of time to recoup that savings if we bought a fridge for $1000.

I have the meter checked out for the next 10 days. I think I will look into a few other things we have plugged in to see what our energy hogs are. I'm not sure exactly what the results will show or if they will be worth making any changes.

Have you used a Kill a Watt meter? Do you know how much energy it costs to run your fridge? Would you replace a fridge just to save $40 a year?

I'm going to look for one of those meters! Cool!
Our fridge is super old I wouldn't doubt if it costs us well over $100.

If you still have a plan to sell your current home to facilitate a move in a year or so, you might justify buying the fridge you desire as stainless appliances are important to potential buyers. It also gives you time to enjoy the new, less expensive to operate fridge, workout best fridge organization and how many times a week you might need to polish the surface.

snafu, I have thought of that. In this part of the country it is common to take fridge, washer and dryer with you when you move, however, I have heard of a few people recently that had buyers who wanted the appliances to stay. I'm sure a new fridge would have to stay...then we might be buying new at the next place and who knows what color will be that next house!

I think we might miss the current sales before we decide. But they will be back around before any potential sale.

I want a Kill-A-Watt meter! I wonder why I can find one to borrow. My "wants" list is tremendously overpopulated, but I'd love a new range.

I love our energy meter! I've tested all sorts of things and got an education (for example, our cellphone chargers don't draw power once the phone is fully charged - there's a shut off of some sort - so we can leave them plugged in). I haven't done the fridge because the plug is sooooo far back there! But now I want to!
