Vehicle Registration

September 6th, 2013 at 03:12 pm

The vehicle registration 'bill' came in the mail yesterday. For my van and DHs truck the yearly tags total $480. Next year will be lower, as my van will be old enough for the lower rate. The savings will be $78. This means I could save a little less each month to compensate for that, but I have a feeling a teen car will be in our future, so I should just keep setting the same money aside.

I know I paid the registration last year with a credit card, and paid an additional fee to do so. I justified it since the charge helped to earn a credit card bonus reward. May do that this year, if I see a card we should get for the rewards. I have until mid October to decide on that one.

I save monthly for the car registration money, so I'm all set to pay it. Do you save monthly for your vehicle registration? Or just come up with the money when it is time?

$480? OMG. & California gets a bad wrap? Big Grin Actually, our DMV has accepted credit cards (no fees) for many years. Which is nice. Very rare for a government agency.

We save up always for these things (1/12 saved per month). Mine just happens to be due this month too.

Yep, $150 for the truck and $330 for the van. Wish we had better roads that made it seem worth it!

Now this is crazy, I just got back from the DMV doing my registration! Are we on the same universe pattern or what Smile I also save during this year but this year I over budgeted because I forgot I would be using by veteran tax exemption. So I only paid $33 out of pocket so now I will be counting that extra toward my snowflake total for the month!

I pay mine once a year so when the bill comes I just pay it like any regular bill.

Wow! I won't get as annoyed when we get our NYS registration every TWO years for $112.00. The county next to us is $38.00, which is what we used to pay two years ago as well!

I don't budget monthly for it, just take out of savings when due.

I suppose the bigger the population in some states spreads the costs of roads, and so forth around to more people. I'm jealous of those lower rates, but I like that we aren't in a highly populated area.

I only pay $67 per car here in TX. So I usually just plan for it the month before so I can spread it out a little bit and don't have an unexpected expense.

Wow. Here in PA it's around $35 bucks, so I don't have to work hard to fit it in the budget.

Mine is only around $60 and it's only that high because we have a vanity plate. WA state had an initiative pass several years back that it could only cost $33 for the regular registration. Trucks, SUVs, and Vans were a bit more than cars, but not much, and vanity plates a bit more than that.

I love reading the SA blogs, but not just for inspiration. I also learn about financial life in a different country. Today, i came across and looked up: NegAm, homestead exemption and HCOLA (which unfortunately, with median house prices of 510k in my suburb I also learnt i live in :-( ).

Today I also found out you pay a lot cheaper vehicle registration than we do in Western Australia (albeit ours includes mandatory third-party insurance). It's so expensive we can pay in three-monthly installments, semi-annually or annually. Our two cars are $530.50 and $508.45 = $1,038.95 per year.

Hard work finding it on the website, but it's $18.92/100kgs weight licence fee, insurance, stamp duty and gst on the insurance, and recording fee. In previous years i paid for it from that fortnight's pay, but now following the expert tips from SAs I build up the balance over the year!
