It Does Pay to Wait

April 24th, 2012 at 05:21 pm

We decided just yesterday to have DH fly home one more time before his class is out at the end of May. We looked at flights yesterday for the weekend he can get away and the cheapest ticket was $489.

This morning I checked one site and saw $689. Yikes. I thought Tuesday was the day to buy tickets! I actually I read that 3pm eastern was the time the tickets were repriced by the airlines. Anyway, I went off to the gym, did a few things around the house and it was now late morning.

After clearing all my cookies from the computer, I check again. The price for the ticket we wanted was $342.20. Talk about a savings! I have yet to get a ticket for this route for less than that.

What is the best deal you have grabbed on an airline ticket in recent months?

In my early 20s I was the cheap travel guru, and somehow became travel agent for my family. Anyway, I was thinking it was sad I was still "family travel guru" since I don't think I know much about it. HA! {My knowledge came from friends who traveled all the time}. BUT, I just heard this Tuesday thing the other day, and then I read this today, so passed along to my dad and sister who are booking flights. Told them both that today would be a good day. I am flight shopping too. Thanks for the tip!!

I apparently could have gotten Denver tickets @ $230 if I waited to Tuesday. They are back to $230 today. I paid 25% too much. Live and learn! What I usually do is price all the local airports, and then buy directly from airline. Doing so often can save $100 -$200 per ticket (which adds up fast when there is more than one traveler)! It often seems so random which airport has the cheapest flights, and we have several local airports to choose from.

When I booked my Amtrak tickets, leaving on a Tuesday night saved something like $16 over any other night of the week. Maybe it's something about Tuesday. Smile

@FrugalTexan, we bought today, but the flight is for a Friday morning and a Monday return. I read that the best day to fly is Wednesday if you want the cheapest ticket.

Not for me. I looked at flights on Thursday, came back that evening and they'd gone up $72. I was frustrated but went ahead and booked them. I've been checking the same flight and it went down by about $6-$8 yesterday and today, but nowhere near its original price tag.
