Second Paint Estimate - Yikes!

April 21st, 2010 at 07:13 pm

We received our second paint estimate today. Not exactly the nice figure of the first. $3,900. Nearly double the first. The second estimate does offer a second coat of paint, but no repair work included. Strange. We asked for a small repair to be included.

Two coats of paint seems like a good idea, but we are moving in about two years (or less). The main problem is the bottom edges of the lap siding, which will be scraped, primed, spray painted and then back brushed. I think this proceedure will correct that problem. We are also staying with the same colors.

Final decision: first estimate hands down.
Savings: $1,825

Is it costing you anything for the estimates? If not why not get a third since they are so different.

That's quite a difference! Our $2200 quote was for primer, spray paint, and back brush (one layer of paint). OF course, guy tells us he wouldn't bother to do more - considering the region, etc. We could easily get a quote for $5k if we found someone who didn't seem to be affected by the economy.

As long as the first guy is not a scam artist, I'd go with him. It's hard for me to get past the "too good to be true" aspect of the quote we got - but we have done our homework and will just go with it. The "too good to be true" bells ring a lot in this economy - people will do work for a fraction of what they would in the boom.
