White Elephants

December 4th, 2008 at 09:35 pm

I'm supposing most people know what a white elephant gift is. It is an item that is no longer useful to the owner, but could still be useful to someone else. It comes from your own home...you do not buy it. At least this is my definition of a white elephant.

Edit: Actually dictionary.com refers to a white elephant as a possession unwanted by the owner but difficult to dispose of

My in laws have decided that the adults will do a white elephant exchange this year rather than drawing names for new store bought gifts. This saves me about $30!

However, I have a little problem. I have sold almost everything on ebay that I don't use on a regular basis! What do I give? How about helping me out, what would you give from your home if you had to give a white elephant gift? Maybe your ideas will help me find something...two somethings actually. My husband and I each have to give a gift.

Thanks!!

Do you have any coffee mugs that are unique? To me a White Elephant gift is something completely useless - almost as a gag... but if you're doing it this way for Christmas as a real gift you might want to put some thought into it Wink I bet between now and Christmas you'll find something!

What a great idea!! I think my family would not go for this at all though. They are very "money shows you that we love you and you love us."...anyways- white elephant...movies or books definitely.

Any bottles of wine laying around? LOL! Or how about a theme-basket of snacks, candies, crackers, or maybe bath salts & soaps and fancier shampoos or body wash, candles. I guess this would all be difficult unless you had a stockpile of extra stuff. Hopefully you don't white elephant a gift back to the person that give it to you in the first place!

I have done this game many times and enjoyed it. However some of those gag gifts are quite embarrasing and it is not fun to be the person to recieve it.

Hmmm, I'd probably grad a book I've already read and is in my online sales box, maybe a piece of jewlery I don't wear anymore, DVD I don't watch...huh, I guess I have a lot of stuff I don't use anymore around the house. I should Ebay them, but I always think, "Who wants this old junk?"
