My friend bought me lunch today since I helped her do some organizing at her office. We had brown rice and veggies with teryaki sauce. It was really good.
My girls school offered lemonade and cookies to volunteers today. I didn't go because I was with my friend.
It is nice to be recognized for the giving of my time, but that isn't why I do it. I enjoy spending time with my kids at school and knowing the people they spend their day with.
I really like getting out of the house to help others. Sometimes the mundane chores at home just aren't enough.
Advantage of Giving my Time

That is the one thing I am proud of my dh for doing. HE would have never volunteered before we had kids, but he got laid off when I became pregnant with our first. We decided it wasn't worth the effort to find a job for a few months only, so I encouraged him strongly to volunteer and meet people (we had just moved), etc. With nothing better to do, he gave it a whirl. For a long time it was really the only time he got out of the house.
Plus I feel less bad for not having much time myself. With a full-time job and kids, I leave the volunteering to him. I look forward to when the kids are older and we can volunteer together though. It's something I want to instill in the kids - the importance of volunteering.
I think the universal "thank you" for volunteers is food.
