Our Cars Are Paid For

March 16th, 2008 at 02:32 pm

I always find it interesting to know what type of cars people have, how they paid for them and if they owe any money. So I'll share mine.

We've owned an '89 Nissan Truck, ,89 Geo Metro, '97 Plymouth Breeze. We leased a '96 Nissan Sentra for two years for $132/mo. Currently we own a '97 Dodge Caravan and a'02 Ford Taurus.

Our current vehicles are paid for and were bought used. We've always bought used knowing that autos depreciate quickly in the first year or two. We took out four year loans and paid off within two years in both cases. Both vehicles have over 100,000 miles. We have a significant EF to cover repair costs when they arise, which has been less than once a year.

It is a relief not to have a car payment. But that may change soon. The van is still reliable. My husband drives it 30 minutes to and from work each day. It has $122,000 miles and the transmission MAY be going out. That's what it seems like to me...he disagrees.

So, with our raise in income we are considering getting a used Honda Odyssey. That will mean a car payment unless we can hold out long enough to pay cash...I just not sure if I'm that patient. I know I can wait long enough to have money for the down payment, taxes and tags.

I'll keep you posted.

Hey, my cars are paid for too. I have a '90 Odyssey and a 2000 Acura TL. They both run great. With any luck, I won't need to buy a new one until I have enough saved up to pay cash.

My car is debt free but my DH still owes until April 2010 (he is making $100 xtra principle payments). My car is a 2001 Toyota Highlander (runs great and I keep up with the scheduled maintenance) and I plan to drive it until the wheels fall off. I have committed 2008 to a $300 monthly for a new car fund and $100 car maintenance fund to prepare for the worst. We both decided that we would no longer get car loans but pay in cash due to the depreciation.

    Good Luck!

When we were young we paid cash for old, high quality cars. Like I paid $1k for a '82 Toyota in 1992 and $1k for a '93 Saturn in 2003. Drove those cars 10 years, between the 2. Never spent much to maintain them. Dh had an old Honda and Mitsubishi.

With time and cash though, we bought up a little. Though it's been a conundrum. We now have American cars and not thrilled with the quality. We have a '01 Ford (paid cash for in 2002) and a '05 Dodge Caravan (mostly paid cash for it in 2006).

I know it's bad when I long for my 20-year-old Toyota! LOL. Not the quality I am used to.

We both save up around $2k/year to pay cash for our next cars. We think we would like to skip American and buy some 1-year-old Toyotas the next round. Plus they have come down much in price over time. We may even consider buying new next go round. (If we buy new we'll keep 20 years, that would be the goal).

It will be a while. Our cars have 80k/50k miles and are just babies. In the past we bought around 150k and pushed to 200k .

But yeah, the cash in our bank has always dictated the purchase price of our cars. Likewise, we can afford more and better each time.

My car is debt free as well. I've had friends look at me strange because I say I've never had a car payment.

My husband is a "car person" and wants a new car every few years. Since he has worked 7 days a week all his life, I indulge his love of new cars.
    We have a 2008 corvette, a 2004 corvette, a 2001 work van, an 1978 corvette and a 1933 ford victoria.

I used to drive a '97 Dodge Avenger, which I loved dearly and owned outright. It's amazing when you actually do have a car payment how much you miss NOT having one. The tranny on the Avenger died as she had 110,000 miles on her and had spend years in stop and go nasty nasty bad for cars traffic. We bought a brand new 2005 Honda CRV in the hopes that it will last us for another 10 to 20 years. We currently pay on the car, but one of my goals is to hammer that debt within 2008 so we can be car payment free again. We are a one car household as we also utilize Chicago's clean and friendly public transportation system (note the sarcasm...he he he).

Pre-Dave Ramsey and this website we always assumed auto loans were a part of life. Now we have two paid off vehicles - a 2002 Nissan and a 1997 Nissan. I don't do American vehicles. Starting in April we will be making a monthly vehicle payment into a savings account. When it comes time for another vehicle, we will be paying cash.

Frugalhousewife: I really want to be able to pay cash and could technically wait to do so. I'm just to impatient. Dave Ramsey would be mad at me!!

I have a new car so it's not paid for, but I hope to pay it off in half the time as I did with my first car. This is my second car. I bought a 2008 Toyota Corolla LE in November.

i bought a 1998 Nissan Pulsar about a year and three months ago. it was $6500 and i got a loan of $6000 over 5 years for it. I have around $4000 owing on it, and hope to pay that off within another year and three months (2.5 years total - half of the loan term).
before that, my first car was a 1989 Nissan Pintara. I paid $1500 for it in cash, (saved for 8 months after leaving school).
I hope to have the pulsar for another 3 or 4 years, (it has done 214000 k's) and then hope to buy a 2001-2004 Nissan 200sx, or financially providing, a 2001 Holden Monaro Smile my dream car is a Nissan 350z, which is priced at the moment around $65 000. I will probably get that when i'm old! i read somewhere that it is a 'mans car' though, which is quite off putting (i'm a girl).
